Solids and Liquids

Kindergarten is learning about what a solid is and what a liquid is. We had a scavenger hunt around the classroom and picked out various items that were solids and liquids. A student pointed out, our bodies are a solid but apple juice and water are liquids. We learned that a liquid takes the shape of the container it's in. Kindergarten practiced this idea by pouring water into various bowls and containers.

Kindergarten then took a cup of water and put it in the freezer overnight. The next day they saw their liquid turned into a solid. They also realized before they froze the water, they could see through the cup however once in solid form, they could not. We then placed cups on the windowsill to see what would happen. One had our solid ice, another was a cup of liquid water. When we checked on our experiment the following day, we saw the ice melted. We also noticed that the water in our cup was less then the day before. We spoke about how water evaporates into the air. The children really enjoyed this hands on experience.
